ATIS’ Next G Alliance Identifies Key Sustainability Indicators and Technologies Essential for Sustainability-Native Next Generation Radio Network Technologies

WASHINGTON, DC — ATIS’ Next G Alliance (NGA) today announced the release of , a white paper developed to advance critical North American priorities in the 6G future. The paper provides operational key performance indicators (KPIs) that can guide the information and communications (ICT) industry in benchmarking progress toward achieving its sustainability and climate action goals — critical as the industry works to build environmental sustainability into the product lifecycle. “From R&D to standardization to the introduction of Next Generation Radio Access technologies, sustainability is increasingly part of ICT industry decision-making,” said Next G Alliance Managing Director David Young. “The KPIs presented in this white paper will help the industry refine its work in this area and advance it into the 6G future.” “Integrating sustainability principles in the development of Next Generation wireless technologies is essential for the ICT industry to reach Net Zero emissions,” said Bhushan Joshi (Ericsson), Chair, NGA Green G Working Group. “The white paper provides recommendations for KPIs that can be used by the industry to benchmark progress towards achieving sustainability goals and discusses the technological enablers essential for the transition to sustainability-native wireless technologies.” “A shift in mindset centered around sustainable design is of paramount importance. This paper presents an evolution of sustainability indicators, and it also provides guidelines to ensure sustainability is the foundation for designing the next-generation radio network technologies.” said Gagandeep Bhatti (Nokia), Vice Chair, NGA Green G Working Group. Also covered are technological enablers critical for the transition from Sustainability-Aware to Sustainability-Native Next Generation wireless technologies. Three crucial dimensions, namely Observability, Choice and Circular Economy that provide an enhanced approach for implementing KPIs, are also presented.
